Heat Wave by The Living End

Heat Wave By The Living End
Heat Wave was chosen to be the first song on our set list cause of its hard hitting intro which we thought would really hit the judges in the face. We more less followed the original song to detail except for  the second verse which had an acoustic flemenco style guitar strumming which could not be done in the 3 piece arrangement we had so i kept the style of strumming but had the channel of my amp on a clean setting to still give a similar contrast. There were not many changes in this song seeing we tried to replicate the original as close as posible

Over All

                                                                     Over All

The beginning of the group began with Sam and myself [Pat] doing VCE music investigation after deciding that we would be assessed together as a group so after Sam and I decided roughly on our set list of-
-
“Dani California” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers
-          “3s and 7s” by Queens of the stone age
-          “No One Knows” by Queens of the stone age
-          “ I know what I am” by Band of Skulls
-          “Heat Wave” by The Living End

This was the original set list after both learning a few of the songs and practicing the songs we already knew. We came to the conclusion that we needed a bass player. Nick since being in the same class was always eager to jam whether it be on his instrument of choice or not and he could pick up what we were playing quickly so it was if the group joined him, it was natural.
After jamming and playing the few songs we knew as a group I realized that I would have trouble playing “3s and 7s” as it has two guitar parts and I would require a loop pedal and learn how to use it fairly well along with also doing the vocals so we decided to drop the song from the set list.
After playing just a couple of songs of the set list here and there like at the Wednesday school concerts we grew to play well together.

One of the outcomes for VCE music investigation was a composition assignment which required us to write a song and this song would later be a part of our set list. The song was called different and written by Sam and myself.
We eventually learnt all the songs but I was hesitant about playing knows as I struggle to sing the vocals and I couldn’t remember the guitar solo but after playing it a few times  it got easier to sing.

We got the chance to play at the schools assembly and we played well with the idea of a final set list in the back of my mind we keep practicing and as the date of our exam drew closer we began to practice more frequently. We went from going from class practice to practice in our frees and then taking classes off that we were ahead in and then we went to after schools the practice was intense to the point where I was sweating and was exhausted after each type we played the set list. After we timed the set list a few times we realized we had enough time to add in another song.

Since we had to relate the song to our focus area we had to choose a song from the alternative rock genre and it had to be from the 2000s – present. We had a to have a little bit of a brain storm, it was a unanimous decision that it was going to be blink 182 but it was choosing which song. So we chose a classic “I miss you”.

The next thing to do would be to figure out what order we wanted to play them in. “Heat Wave” has a really strong in your face intro so we decided to choose that for our first song. The second song that was in the set list was “No One Knows” since this song was in drop C, I had to switch guitars to make the performance time efficient and to make it look professional so I wanted to get that song out of the way so that’s the reason it was placed second in the set list.

Our final set list
-“Heat Wave” by the Living End
-“No One Knows” by Queens of the Stone Age
-“I know what I am” by The Band of Skulls
-“I miss you” By Blink 182
-“Different” which is an original
-“Dani California” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

The day came for the exam and the trip up there to Sandringham College where the exam was held. It was good as the group got to spend time together that wasn’t playing music.  When we finally got there the set up was a little stressful but we got through and the sound check ran pretty well. Then the lady came and said if we were ready for the judges [in which we were ready] and the time came for the final test, the end for all that practice.
